What PostHog is like

PostHog is an open-source analytics platform made by PostHog Inc. in the United States. Its web analytics tool is a pre-built dashboard showing visitors, pageviews, sessions, bounce rate, top pages, referrers, UTM campaigns, countries and devices. The same events also feed PostHog's product analytics and session replay, so a site owner can start with traffic numbers and go deeper later.

Pricing is usage-based in US dollars. The first 1 million events each month are free, with no credit card. On the pay-as-you-go plan, each extra event is charged at a rate that falls with volume. A website-only setup sends anonymous events, the cheapest type, and every pageview counts as one event. The default script also sends page-leave and click events, which count too, so real bills can be higher than one event per pageview.

Data is hosted in the US (Virginia) or EU (Frankfurt). PostHog sets a first-party cookie by default, and an optional cookieless mode counts visitors with a server-side hash instead. The code is MIT licensed and can be self-hosted, without official support.
